If you’re looking for some R&R, you’ll find it easy to mold into life in Jingdezhen, porcelain capital of the world. Just a 1-hour flight or 4-hour train ride from Shanghai, hike to ancient villages where locals still dry colorful crops on their terraces and meet the artists breathing new life into the art of porcelain creation. You may have heard of “fine china” and this is where it got its name. In the neighboring province, get a chance to hike along UNESCO-listed Huangshan for its breathtaking scenery of staggering granite peaks.
Arrive in Huangshan and be greeted by your local WildChina guide • Head to Huangshan (“Yellow Mountain”), which has been immortalized in the elegant brushstrokes of Chinese landscape paintings • Enjoy a welcome dinner – or a feast as some would say
Take the Yuping cablecar up and hike along the top for a breathtaking view of the granite peaks • Hike through the staggering peaks and deep valleys of Xihai Grand Canyon, a natural masterpiece less frequented by tourists
Imagine yourself back in the time of the Ming Dynasty when visiting the ancient wooden residences in the UNESCO World Heritage Site of Xidi • Make your way to the UNESCO World Heritage Site of Hongcun village, where ancient waterways snake through Hui-style village residences • Drive to Jingdezhen, China’s porcelain capital
Begin your day by learning the centuries-old craft of porcelain at the Ancient Kiln. Nowadays, you can find classically trained pottery masters making porcelain in the traditional manner and pass by the huge kilns that were once used to make the emperor’s prized possession • Step back in time and see tradition in action at the Ceramic Folklore Museum • Get your hands dirty at a contemporary ceramics studio with a hands-on pottery workshop • Witness archaeological ceramic excavation at the Imperial Kiln • Go on a gentle hike to the Dragon Pavilion overlooking the city. Originally built during the Tang Dynasty, the structure features red bricks with upturned roofs in the classical Chinese style
Spend the morning leisurely strolling through ceramic galleries and stores converted from a factory in the Tao Xi Chuan Art District • Your WildChina guide will transfer you to the airport or train station for your departure home
Pig Inn Yixian may appear to be a typical village home on the outside, but step inside and you will discover a traditional, Huizhou-style ancient home.
